Why Today’s Vote in Iran Doesn’t Matter

The media is fawning all over themselves this morning telling us that a new day, and a new softer attitude maybe dawning in Iran. Don’t believe it.

You see the President of Iran is just the barking or whimpering dog of Iran’s Supreme Leader Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenie. If you’re not sure what powers the Supreme Leader of Iran has, all you need to do is look at the title. He makes all the rules, writes all the policies and is charge of the armed forces. In other words the guy is the Supreme Leader, and unless he has a change of heart, nothing coming out of Iran will change.

So don’t believe that, if current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad loses to his moderate rival Mir Hossein Mousavi today, anything will change.

First of all the four candidates running today all had to be approved by the 12 member Iranian Guardian Council that wields a lot of power.

Here’s the kicker. Guess who appoints the Iranian Guardian Council? You guessed it the

The Head Cheese

Supreme Leader. Six of them are appointed directly by the Supreme Leader, and the other six are picked by a group of men that are appointed by, you guessed it, the Supreme Leader.

Also, don’t be fooled by these rallies that you see everyday on the news showing rabid Mir Hossein Mousavi supporters.

Iran’s propaganda machine shows you exactly what it wants you to see. It’s not unprecedented for the government to force students to rally for whatever cause the Supreme Leader deems worthy. Making it look like Iranians really have a choice in who will be their powerless leader, is one of those causes.
